Feeding your Hamster
Your hamster’s diet will consist largely of commercial hamster food. You can purchase these at any pet store. An adult Syrian needs around 2 Tbsp. Dry food should not be offered in a bowl, but scattered the cage for the hamster to find. You can hide it in piles of hay and toilet paper rolls. This provides the hamster with stimulation. For information on fruit and vegetables see the appropriate section.
Avoid foods that have too many colorful pressed bits. Check the ingredients to make sure there is no molasses, honey or other sugary items. These are unhealthy for hamsters. It is better to choose a food that does not contain any fruit so you can control your hamster’s fruit intake better.
My hamster gets two different brands, one is National Geographic Hamster Entrée and the other is Oxford Hamster Essentials.
