Many people will tell you that 360 square inches is sufficient for a Syrian Hamster. However this is much to small for even a dwarf hamster to live in.
The absolute smallest your cage should be is .5 square meters (775 square inches) or 100 cm long, 50 cm wide, and 50 cm high.. However, going bigger is always better. It is recommend to put at least 7 inches of bedding in at least one part of the cage.
The way I have the bedding in my cage, is 7 inches in a part of the cage where my hamster can dig and build tunnels, and around 3-5 inches of bedding in the rest of the cage.
If your cage is properly set up, your hamster will stop chewing bars (and other unwanted behaviors) and will start to behave like a hamster does in the wild.
